I was so fortunate to be brought up in an animal-loving family. We had a variety over the years; hermit crabs, cats, rats, fish, budgies, rabbits, and so on. It was at four years old, when my mum let me select our family’s Golden Retriever puppy from a litter, that I learnt how very important dogs would be in my life.

Ricci, as Mum named her, became my best friend. I threw my first ‘sicky’ at four when I didn’t want to go to Kindy because I wanted to stay home with her. She was my play buddy, my pillow, and my toast-crust-eater. I can remember crying into her fur on my bad days and running around the backyard celebrating with her on the good ones.

It sounds corny, but over her 14 years Ricci taught me the bond that humans can have with animals, and how much soul and personality they can show if you spend the time with them and really look.

I’m sure our dogs take a piece of our hearts with us when they go, but the love they bring to our lives will forever outweigh those goodbyes.
