There’s some sort of magical boldness about art that children create. They have no fear, perception of art supply cost, or worry about lack of skill. Kids get stuck into creating without hesitation and they have fun doing it. I’ve come to find that improving your art as an adult is finding that magic again; not being afraid to ruin work, “waste” supplies or try something new.
My mum was the queen of kids' crafts and one day we’d be finger painting and the next we’d be building a volcano with bicarb soda and vinegar. Even though I was only young I remember finding so much joy in trying different craft activities and as I grew older my parents were such wonderful supports of whatever art mediums I wanted to pursue.
This one’s for you, the six-year-old-Rach who wrote that she wanted to be ‘a artist’.
