From Where I’d Rather Be
16th May - 16th June, 2024 | Majella Wines, Coonawarra, South Australia
Rachel Clayfield’s first solo exhibition, ‘From Where I’d Rather Be’ is a series of oil paintings that convey the appreciation the artist has for her rural home of Coonawarra and the feelings of peace and comfort that the area brings. The exhibition aims to convey a sense of warm nostalgia, transporting the viewer to the landscapes and memories that the artist holds close to her heart.
From the artist…
This exhibition was born out of an interesting combo of circumstances; a love for the area, a passion for oil painting and a borderline out-of-the-blue decision to quit my job and live a little unhinged for a while.
These paintings are all based around my childhood in Coonawarra and some of my favourite memories and locations. It felt natural to paint a series that was built around a subject I know so well (me lol). We only truly know what it’s like to live in our own shoes, so I guess this is my attempt of sharing my wonderful rural upbringing with you.
Viewing my work, you’ll notice I really enjoy paintings that look like they’re made of paint. I don’t enjoy fighting a medium and trying to make it what it’s not; I want to see brush strokes, colour variations and ‘imperfections’. For me, that’s what makes human-made art so special; it’s real, it’s made with two hands and loving hours and tears of frustration.
If you have an opportunity to visit Majella to see my art, please head along and take a look. It’s free entry, the staff at Majella are fantastic and you can taste the delicious wines on offer while you browse!
Thank you for being here, your support means the world,
